For the past week, I have been getting Chicago foodies and wine lovers totally jazzed about, and drinking, the exciting wines of South America–Chile, Argentina, and Uruguay. This Sunday, I take my show east to my favorite city, New York, to keep spreading the praises.
So are you ready for this? I have some awesome news for all you wine lovers and blog readers.
I know a bunch of you were bummed that some of the events were private in New York. Well, we are opening up to the public the Chilean Wine Tasting event at the ICE (Institute of Culinary Education) on October 27th at 6-8pm. I am not going to even tell you the price (yet) because it is ridiculously inexpensive considering the a-m-a-z-i-n-g wines we are trying. You’d need to make friends with the importer, the winery owner, or a wine journalist to get this kinda deal. Seriously. All wines hand-picked by moi, of course.
Here are four reasons why the timing is RIGHT to attend this rocking class where you’ll explore all the wonders of Chilean wine with me.
- Local, local, local: Ok, so maybe Chile is 5,000 miles south of New York, but each of these wines was hand-selected for a reason. A connection with the place, people, and traditions where these grapes are grown and the wine is made. We’ll get to taste a veritable universe of wines from pioneer stories like Montes to the tiny boutique projects of Aquitania and Neyen. Inspiring? OMG, yes.
- Emerging: New to wine? New to South American wines? Want to hone your tasting skills and beef up your wine knowledge to drink better? Then look not farther. In this class, we will learning the art of blind tasting and thinking out- of-the-box about wines. You’ll also get the dish not only on the wines but on what to pair them with and clues to picking them out in resaturants. Who wouldn’t want to discover Chile’s unique style and staggering variety of wines, different than other New World country like Australia or California.
- HOT Affordable Wines: Wine consumers today are looking for value and a true sense of place. For that reason alone, Chilean wines are exploding in the market. Chile’s also is showing its depth with wines ranging from zesty Sauvignon Blanc to earthy Carmenere and mineral-laden Chardonnays from the desert north. While we are serving up some classy wines tonight, we also are looking to underscore that Chile is prospering even in the current market because of its a-w-e-s-o-m-e price-quality ratio. We’ll explore that at different price points from a US$10 to finer wines that could rival their Bordeaux cousins. All wines are readily available in the NY market.
- Come Fly with Me: So what do you know about Chile as a country? The culture? Beyond just tasting the wines, the whole idea of this presentation is to connect with the place, and travel by the glass in an evocative, highly photographic presentation. I will be your most esteemed, crazily passionate host; after all, Chile is my HOME. Come explore the terruño (that’s Spanish for terroir) with me and get to know the rich, exotic flavors that are as intriguing as the land from which they hail. We are going to have a FUN night. Don’t miss out!
So just to really sell you into coming, these are some of the wines we are going to taste:
Maycas del Limarí, Chardonnay Reserva
Emiliana Orgánico, Coyam Blend
Montes, Alpha Syrah
Aquitania, Lazuli Cabernet
Concha y Toro, Terrunyo Carmenere
Neyén, Neyén (Carmenere-Cab blend)
And a surprise Sauvignon Blanc is on the way…
