Chile
Chile stretches like a thin noodle along the Pacific Ocean over half the South American continent. Never more than a hundred miles wide, the wild Pacific crashes on the rocky shoreline to the west and the snow-capped Andes form the jagged backbone to the east. This long extension of latitudes is responsible for the country’s thrillingly diverse range of cuisine, wine, and landscapes to explore.
In the north, Chile has the driest desert in the world with desolate moonscapes, starry night skies, and pink flamingo-filled lagoons. In the Mediterranean heartland, the buzzing capital of Santiago boasts shady parks, a vibrant culinary and cultural scene, and a laid back Southern California kind of vibe. Surrounding the city are many of Chile’s famous wine appellations producing outstanding wines from cooler coastal varieties to robust reds inland.
The southern lake district is awe-inspiring with its wild rainforests and volcano-strewn azure lakes. Here Mapuche indigenous culture meets the Germanic imprint left by settlers and there’s a legacy of creamy cheeses, artisan beer, and the spicy merken chili powder. At the end of the continent is blustery Patagonia where massive glacial fields meet the serrated peaks of Andes in the Torres del Paine national park, windblown golden prairies, and some of the best trekking–and king crab–in the world. And take jaunt to remote Easter Island to connect with mystical Polynesian culture. In between there are countless fjords, geysers, beaches, lakes, rivers, volcanoes, and so much beauty to take in your soul wants to burst. It’s absolutely moving.
