Salta, High Altitude Wines
In Argentina’s far northwest, where the Andes seemingly pierce the clouds and the high desert stretches far into the horizon, Salta offers a wine journey unlike any other. This is one of the most extreme viticultural zones on Earth—home to just 1.75% of Argentina’s total wine production, but producing some of its most captivating bottles from the highest vineyards in the world.
Our week unfolds across three remarkable stays: a Relais & Châteaux retreat just outside Salta city, a working estancia nestled among century-old vines, and a boutique hideaway in Cafayate. Along the way, we explore the contrasts that define this region—between Spanish colonial architecture and vast, cinematic landscapes, between age-old bodegas and a new generation of trailblazing winemakers.
We’ll taste iconic high-altitude Malbecs and floral Torrontés, but also explore bold, expressive interpretations of Tannat, Cabernet Franc, and local blends from young winemakers pushing the region forward. Some source grapes from remote pockets of the valley, others reinterpret tradition with a fresh, minimal hand—but all are shaped by Salta’s soaring altitude, sun-drenched days, and cool desert nights.
Between tastings, we’ll dive into the spirit of the land: exploring colorful quebradas, visiting artisans in adobe villages, and savoring meals, where spice reigns, that reflect the indigenous, Spanish, and criollo roots of the region’s cuisine. Raw, radiant, and deeply soulful, Salta is Argentina’s untamed gem—where wine, culture, and geography converge at breathtaking heights.
