After some 27 years in the wine business, there are few things I get excited about. However, for some reason that I can't explain, there is something about Tanat that has always intrigued me. My peers have always chided this infatuation and I meet few who share this appreciation (or "get" it). My first real exposure to Tanat was in Punta del Este in tow with a crew of wine distributors preparing for a tour of Argentina and Chile. I was smitten and out spoken about my positive experience, however, present company were very critical...and I thought perhaps something was wrong with me. Ever since though, I gravitate to this variety often and in spite of the many places that produce good Tanat (Argentina, California and France) I always picture Uruguay as I do Malbec for Argentina.

I love that you hit some of my favorite wineries. I've been writing about Uruguayan wine on and off for the last five years and it's still hard to get anyone to pay attention - let alone believe you! Of course, despite their being 400 and some wineries in the country, only around 10% of those produce "fine wine", and the volume available for export is pretty limited at most of them, so I suppose for most wine aficionados it will always be a mystery. But well worth a visit if they come down this way.
