Sylvia, thanks for writing. As an FYI, this is in the original language (Spanish) published in Revista Placeres in Chile as my monthly column. It's a cool magazine you can find at Mundo del Vino or on their website for other places. Claro, fue más elocuente en español...Saludos, Liz

I am second generation chilean. My family is a mix between English and American.
I loved the article. Wish it could be translated and published here.
It is not so easy when you do not belong to the high social rich and not soooo rich status. There is a lot of poverty although we are very rich as a country, because of the high price of cooper.
That makes me feel sorrow, very, and also guilty to be so priviliged.
I am jewish and although being born here I feel as if I do not belong. I am not religous and have never been rejected myself. There is something in the air because sometimes you hear antisemite (?) comments. But it is also true there is rejection to poor people from from our border countries who come to work because they make money here.
The chileans families are very close and strangers feel rejected. Sorry I have no more space to write.

I agree. It's otherworldly. I am going again with a group in September to Awasi (hotel in these pics) and can't wait. Where are you on your S. American travels now?

Que Linda!
Last time we were in Chile we visited family working up at Chuqui...San Pedro was very cool, but and we really liked the little oasis town of Toconao, and a great little place to eat in Chiu Chiu (not to mention the ancient dwellings in the valley above town).
It was a fun trip north from La Serena, we kept crossing paths with the same two busses of argentinian school girls on a long field trip ( in Copiapo, in San Pedro, out at the salt flats), and then passed the film busses from the last Bond film while driving back south. Definitely looking forward to going back there and spending more time...stunning.
