"Moving to the end of the American continent by no means restricts international travel. You just become a pro, very quickly, at sleeping on 8-hour flights."

That.

I love Chile for the same reasons, though I'd say my (our, including my husband in this) main reason for being here is because of the life/business project that we've started here.

Nice to meet you at the dinner, btw.

In reply to <a href="https://lizcaskey.com/travel-2/my-two-americas/#comment-19631">Annje</a>.

Definitely agree. In my 20s I had to push all that away. Since I turned 30 a couple years ago, I have come to terms and peace with it. AND I came to the realization I have created my life as I have wanted to.

Oregon is beautiful and I feel like 5 days in Portland were barely a scratch on the surface. I would like to go back with more time, my husband, no work-related events. As I rediscover the US, definitely the west coast vibes with me more now. Maybe it is the resemblance geographically to Chile, which I like, and the people. People out west, generally speaking, tend to be very chill. Good luck with the move back down here.

I am from Oregon, kind of, and just got back from a visit there mid-May (all sunny, thank you!). I was re-struck by how beautiful a city is is, after living in Texas for nearly 9 years. I miss the outdoorsy-ness of Portland. I had a delectable chocolate-almond croissant and one of the best cups of coffee I can remember (in the Pearl District) and got to renew my love of hiking (killed by TX heat) in the Columbia gorge.

I also relate to that feeling of wanting to escape one's own borders, a kind of symbolic rejection of what I didn't like in my 20s (which is what took me to South America, and years in Chile). In preparing for a more permanent move to Chile soon, the sensation is different. I am still excited, in many ways, to be going back to Chile, and yet, in my 30's I have become much more at peace with my cultural ties to the US and feel like there is a sense in which I don't have anything to prove, in either direction--if that makes any sense.

Loved reading your take on Portland!
