Hi Liz, great article!
I drink lots of yerba mate too (habit learnt in the Chilean Patagonia - Chaiten/Futaleufu area - where mate is very popular - yes, yerba mate does exist in Chile!). It is also great for thirst quenching.
A few other things I've learnt:
- you never stir the yerba,
- when drinking with others, which as you explained, is a ritual and a very importante bonding experience, you only say "thank you" once you've had enough. If you don't say thank you, it means you're still "in" the drinking circle,
- yerba dulce is only drunk in the metal "cups" and
- you must wait until the wood cup is "weathered" before it is really yummy and never wash it with detergent!
Saludos and enjoy the yerba!
